    History of Narvik

People have lived in Narvik since at least the Bronze Age, and it is known that Vikings lived here.

Narvik’s history begins in the 19th century, when it was developed as an ice-free port for the Swedish iron ore mines. The Swedish mining company LKAB ships the majority of its ore from Narvik and is an important employer and landowner in Narvik.

Because the Nazis wanted the iron ore coming from Sweden, Narvik was of crucial important for World War II. The Battle of Narvik is one of the first major battles of the war and also saw the first Allied victory during the war. However, the port was eventually captured by the Nazis, securing the iron ore.

    History of Mo i Rana

Mining, boatbuilding and hunting/fishing have been important to the area for hundreds of years. From 1730 onwards there was a Sami market here. Eventually Norwegians settled here and established trading connections with the Swedes. Many of the original trade routes are now hiking paths.

Mo i Rana grew as an industrial centre in the early 20th century and people moved from all over Norway to work here. The Iron Mill was one of the biggest employers in the area.

    Mo i Rana Today

Nord University is located here. The campus has around 470 students.

The municipality is rich in iron ore and water for producing power, so Mo i Rana has always been an industrial town. Norsk Jernverk, established in 1946, produced steel for the country. Mo Industrial Park is one of Norway’s largest industrial parks.

    History of Bodø

In the Viking Age the province was known as Hålogaland, and Bodø was mentioned for the first time in 1663 as a village with a postal service.

Bodø was established as a town in 1816 to promote trade and fishing in the region.

Most of Bodø was destroyed during a Luftwaffe attack on the 27th of May 1940. Over half of the population lost their homes during the attack, so the Swedish government helped built 107 apartments in winter 1941. These houses are still located in Bodø. The town was subsequently built after the war.

    Bodø Today

Bodø has been named the European Capital of Culture for 2024.

Bodø has a football club, Bodø/Glimt, which is also the northernmost club to win a European national league competition.

Bodø has a university, the Nord University, with 12,000 students attending. Bodø is also the location of the only police academy outside of Oslo in Norway. The Norwegian Armed Forces headquarters for Northern Norway is located just outside the city. There is also a major hospital here.

Train: Bodø is the northern terminus of the Nordland Line, which connects the city to Trondheim.

Ferry: Bodø is a port of call for the coastal ferry, which stops here for 2 hours on the northbound journey. Ferries connect Bodø to the Lofoten Islands. You can read my guide for taking the ferry via the link below.

    Getting Around

    Bodø is a walkable city.

    Shops

Gundersons is one of my favourite print shops in Norway. Here you can buy beautiful prints of Northern Norway.

The clothing brand Gøril and Frøydis is a locally designed clothing brand – you can check it out at the store O´Johanson (Storgata 28).

Bådin Brewery is a little bit out of town (Tolder Holmers vei 6) but is Bodø’s local microbrewery. You can buy beer there or at some grocery stores in town.

Studio EBN uses salmon leather to created designer bags and accessories – they have been featured in magazines like Vogue, and you can buy them at Storgata 8.

Lastly, you can buy handmade chocolate and macaroons from Craig Alibone in the city centre.

    Places to Eat

    Cafes & Bakeries

Craig Alibone – patisserie by day and champagne bar by night, this chic café has decadent artisan cakes, truffles and macarons.

    Quick Bites

Kafe Kjelen – this café serves Møsbrømetse – flatbread with brown cheese, sugar and melted butter.

    Reasonable Restaurants

Hundholmen Brygghus – huge menu of beers at this inviting, dimly lit gastropub that serves classic pub meals and Norwegian dishes.

    Andenes, Norway

Located on the northernmost tip of the island Andøya, Andenes is a charming village that goes under the radar far too often when people road-trip in Northern Norway. It’s highly recommended to come here for the excellent hiking opportunities, but also the whale safari and puffin safari are a must.

    Things to See & Do

Here’s an overview of some of the best things to see and do in Andenes and the island of Andøya.

    Church

    Andenes Church

Andenes Church was built in 1876 and seats about 400 people. The first church on the site was mentioned in historical records as far back as 1589, although the church was not new when it was mentioned. Some of the church inventory dates back to the late 1400s. A replacement church was built in 1607, but it was replaced again in 1734. That church was replaced with the current church.

    Lighthouse

    Andenes Church

Andenes Lighthouse was built in 1859 to improve the safety of the ships at sea. The lighthouse was automated and depopulated in 1978. It is possible to take a guided tour up to the lighthouse organised by the Andøy Museum but note that it involves 148 steps.

    Museum

    Andenes Church

The museum has exhibitions on the polar regions, with emphasis on the life of trapper Hilmar Nøis. There is also an exhibition about the unique geology of Andøya.

    Hikes, Day Trips & Experiences

Looking to go for a hike or take part in a unique experience? Here are our recommendations!

    Hike

    Måltinden

Måltinden is a 408m (2000ft) high mountain and the walking path is about 4km (2.8 miles) one way. The hike itself isn’t demanding, though there are some slightly steep sections.

    Road-Trips

Follow our road-trip guides for scenic trips around Andenes.

    Andøya Tourist Road

Follow this drive from Risøyhamn to Andenes along the west coast of Andøya, passing by fishing villages and historic sites.

    Vesterålen Scenic Drive (fv82)

The traditional region of Vesterålen is not as world-famous as Lofoten, but there’s no denying that Vesterålen is equally as beautiful. On this off-the-beaten path drive, you’ll pass through charming fishing villages and important settlements for North of Norway. This drive connects well with the Lofoten Tourist Road and the Andøya Tourist Road, making it perfect for any Norwegian road-trip!

    Self-Guided Walks

We currently do not have any self-guided walks available in Andenes.

    Uniquely Andenes

Here are some things that you must experience in Andenes.

    Experience

    Whale Watching

Most whale watching tours add a visit to the Whale Museum, which includes a guided tour with a marine biologist through the museum, who explains the different whales as well as ocean conditions around Andenes.

Sperm whales can be seen in summer and humpback whales can be seen in winter.

    Experience

    Puffin Safari

In Bleik, just outside of Andenes, is the wonderful puffin safari. Highly recommended if you want to see the puffins, but the safari is only in the summer months.

    Experience

    Andøya Space Centre

The Andøya High School has a special course in space technology, the only of its kind in Norway. There are 3 classes of 12 students every year. A rocket range at Oksebåsen sends up rockets as part of a space research program but also for commercial purposes. The Andøya Space Centre presents the science behind rockets and the northern lights in an exhibition suitable for all ages. There’s also a great movie about the northern lights worth seeing.

    History of Andenes

Andenes was an important fishing village during the Iron Age. In the Middle Ages, Germans and the Dutch regularly came to Andenes to buy dried fish. The fishermen here also came into contact with the Hansa. By the late 19th century, Andenes had significantly greater exports of fish than any other region in Vesterålen. The stretch between Andenes and Senja is one of the most fish-rich stretches of sea in Europe.

By the early 1900s, it had become one of the largest fishing ports in Norway. The Andøya Air Station was built here in the 1950s and was largely funded by NATO. At its peak, in the 1980s, Andenes was the largest village in the traditional region of Vesterålen. However, when the Andøya Air Station shut down the population dropped significantly.

    Andenes Today

Today tourism is an important source of income for Andenes. Andenes has become a major centre of whale watching.
