Ivalo is a small town in the municipality of Inari, located in the Lapland region. It lies above the Arctic Circle, surrounded by forests, lakes and the Ivalo River. As the administrative centre of Inari, Ivalo has shops, schools, a hospital and even a cinema – along with Finland’s northernmost airport. Lemmenjoki National Park

Finland’s largest national park lies just west of Ivalo. It’s famous for wilderness hikes (including short day-trails) and summer riverboat trips on the Lemmenjoki river. Gold panning and visiting old prospectors’ cabins are unique park experiences.

Uniquely Ivalo

Here are some things that you must do and try in Ivalo

History of Ivalo

The Ivalo area has been home to the Inari Sámi people for thousands of years, where they have lived by hunting, fishing, and reindeer herding. It remained sparsely settled until the late 1800s. Lapland Gold Rush: In 1868, gold was discovered in rivers near Ivalo, sparking a minor gold rush. This attracted settlers and led to the gradual formation of villages (Even today, some hobby prospectors try their luck in the Ivalojoki river, the “Golden River” of Finland.) 20th Century and WWII: Ivalo’s development accelerated in the early 1900s. An airfield was built in 1943 (Ivalo Airport) during World War II.

Late in the war, retreating German forces were active in northern Lapland, including around Tankavaara (60 km south of Ivalo).

In November 1944 the Finnish Army (pursuing German troops) and advancing Soviet forces both reached the Ivalo area. Soviet troops stayed in Ivalo until September 1945. The conflict caused vast destruction across Lapland, and the Germans destroyed Ivalo during their retreat as part of their scorched earth policy.

After the war, better roads and the official opening of Ivalo Airport in 1943 (later expanded) tied Ivalo more closely to southern Finland. The town grew into the service hub for northern Lapland. Today Ivalo still retains a frontier feel, bridging its rugged natural setting with modern comforts.

Travel Information

Getting Here

Fly: Ivalo Airport (airport code IVL) is the northernmost airport in the EU. It has year-round flights to Helsinki (several times daily). In winter, there are frequent charter flights from other European cities too.

Drive:Ivalo lies on Highway E75 (Finnish 4), the main north–south route in Lapland. It is about 200 km north of Rovaniemi (around 3½–4 hours drive). The road is well maintained but can be icy in winter (4WD or tyres recommended). Buses also run from other Lapland towns (e.g. Saariselkä, Inari) via Matkahuolto ticketing. Driving from abroad (e.g. Norway) is possible, but note Lapland’s winter conditions.

Train: The most scenic route is via Rovaniemi. Take the overnight sleeper train from Helsinki (or other points in southern Finland) to Rovaniemi, then catch the Matkahuolto bus to Ivalo (about 3–4 hours). The bus is comfortable and runs daily. During winter months, Arctic road conditions can make this trip long, so allow extra time.

Ferry: No ferry access.
