The Northernmost City in the World

Honningsvåg is the northernmost city in the world (other places further north, such as Longyearbyen, don’t have city status) and a truly fascinating place to visit. It is a major port of call for the coastal ferry, and while most people jump straight on a bus and head straight to the famed North Cape, there is value in staying in Honningsvåg and exploring life far above the Arctic Circle. This guide explains not just the history but also the everyday life in Honningsvåg.

Bamse was a Saint Bernard who was the mascot for the Norwegian navy stationed in the United Kingdom during World War II. Bamse was from Honningsvåg and belonged to Captain Erling Hafto on a fishing vessel that worked as a minesweeper during the war.

Nordkappveien

As you walk into town, you’ll pass some residential homes. Because of the remote location and limited opportunities this far north, buying a house is quite cheap in Honningsvåg. Many ‘enebolig’ – detached houses – can be bought for around 1.7 milion NOK or less.

West of the Moon Gallery

This is a lovely gallery to go to if you want to buy something from Honningsvåg. Here you can find beautiful art and handicrafts made in Honningsvåg. The same owner has another gallery in Kamøyvær (a fishing village located a little further north) called “East of the Sun”.
