Things to See & Do

Here’s an overview of some of the best things to see and do in Lofthus

Historic Church

Ullensvang Church

Ullensvang Church (“Ullensvang Kyrkje”) is a historic church from around the year 1300. The church is built in the English Gothic style of architecture. Next to the church is the Ullensvang Prestegård, or Ullensvang rectory. The farm is first mentioned in 1309 and there has been a rectory continuously since then.

Hikes, Day Trips & Experiences

Looking to go for a hike or take part in a unique experience? Here are my recommendations!

Experience

Trolltunga Active

Trolltunga Active has kayaks available for rent for the day. You need to have some kayaking experience to qualify for a rental. It’s a unique way to explore the fjord and get close to nature.

Experience

Lofthus Ekspedisjon

Lofthus Ekspedisjon has its own cider brewery and fjord-side restaurant. You can do cider tastings here. They also have a sauna!

Hiking

Kråkestien

Kråkestien is a shorter but rewarding hike beginning directly in Lofthus. The trail climbs a steep series of nearly 1,000 stone Sherpa steps to the viewpoint at Vetlehedlesnipa. From the top, hikers are rewarded with sweeping views over Sørfjorden and the surrounding orchards. It is an excellent option for visitors wanting a shorter adventure with spectacular scenery.

Hiking

The Queens Hiking Trail

Dronningstien is one of Norway’s most famous panoramic hikes and is named after Queen Sonja, who frequently hikes the trail. The route stretches between Kinsarvik and Lofthus, offering breathtaking views high above the Hardangerfjord. Hikers pass rocky ridges, mountain lakes and dramatic viewpoints throughout the journey. It is considered a demanding full-day hike but rewards visitors with some of the best fjord scenery in western Norway.

Hiking

The Fruit Trail

The Fruit Trail is an 8km loop around the fruit orchards. The trip should take up to 3 hours total and the hike is graded as easy.

Glacier Tours

Folgefonna Glacier

Day trips to the Folgefonna glacier are popular from Lofthus and the wider Hardanger region. Guided glacier walks allow visitors to explore blue ice formations, crevasses and snowfields safely. The glacier area also offers kayaking, scenic drives and hiking opportunities. During summer, the combination of fjords, orchards and glacier landscapes makes the region especially memorable.

History of Lofthus

Lofthus has been an important settlement in Hardanger for centuries, thanks to its fertile soil and mild microclimate along the fjord. Fruit cultivation became especially significant during the Middle Ages, when monks and traders introduced improved farming methods and fruit trees to the region. Over time, the area became one of Norway’s most productive orchard regions, known particularly for apples, cherries and pears. Today, the orchards remain central to the identity and economy of the village.

During the 19th century, Lofthus grew into a popular destination for wealthy European travellers exploring the Norwegian fjords. Artists, writers and composers were drawn to the dramatic scenery and peaceful atmosphere. Edvard Grieg spent many summers in Lofthus, composing music while staying at Hotel Ullensvang. His presence helped establish the village as both a cultural and tourism destination.

The region also played an important role in fjord transport and trade before modern roads were developed. Boats travelling along Hardangerfjord connected isolated communities and transported fruit and goods to larger cities such as Bergen. Although tourism has grown significantly in recent decades, Lofthus has managed to retain much of its traditional village character and agricultural heritage.

Lofthus Today

Modern life in Lofthus revolves around a combination of tourism, agriculture and outdoor living. Fruit farming remains a major industry, particularly apple production for cider and juice. Many families continue to operate farms that have been passed down for generations, while also welcoming visitors for tastings and accommodation. The village has become increasingly known internationally for its high-quality cider production.

Tourism is strongly seasonal, with spring blossom season and summer hiking months bringing the largest number of visitors. Travellers come for the fjord scenery, famous hikes and slower pace of life. Despite growing popularity, Lofthus remains quieter and less commercialised than some of Norway’s more heavily visited fjord destinations. This gives the village a peaceful and authentic atmosphere that appeals to nature lovers and photographers alike.

Life in Lofthus is closely connected to the surrounding landscape. Residents enjoy easy access to hiking trails, fjord activities and mountain cabins, while community events such as cherry festivals and cider celebrations help preserve local traditions. The village combines modern hospitality with strong cultural roots and a close connection to nature.
