Emma’s Northern Lights Diary
Here are all the times I’ve seen the northern lights for the 22/23 season.

13th September 2023

When? Approx. 11pm

14th September 2023
Where? Outside of BÃ¥tsfjord, Norway. I drove about 45 minutes out of town to one of the highest points on the road. The lights were there right away. It was one of the best shows I’ve ever had. Maybe it is because it is one of the only times I have been alone, but also because the lights were just so magnificent. It’s why I have so many photos below 🙂
When? 9:30pm. I stayed for around an hour or so.
12 October 2023
Where? Near Svolvaer on the Lofoten Islands
When? Approx. 9pm. The lights were pretty weak and didn’t come back for the rest of the night.

2022/23 Season
31st August 2022
Where? Near Kristiansund on Hurtigruten. I was asleep; they woke us up using the northern lights alarm.
When? 12:08am
Photo taken on Fuji TX-4
1st September 2022
Where? Raftsundet in the Lofoten Islands
When? Approximately 11pm – after leaving Svolvaer on Hurtigruten

16th October 2022
Where? Just outside of Rorvik on Hurtigruten
When? Lights began appearing at 10pm. Got a huge light show at 11pm. Lights were still visible at 11:30am and 1am. My best photos were taken at 11pm.

20th October 2022
Where? Aurora Village at Ivalo, Finland. Photos taken from my glass igloo at the property – I didn’t want to get out of bed!
When? We had all been waiting for lights since 9pm, but the aurora waited until 1am to finally show herself.
Photo taken on iPhone Pro Max 14
KP was very low, which is why it took so long to come out.
17th November 2022
Where? Lofoten Islands on Hurtigruten. Between leaving Svolvaer and passing the Trollfjord.
When? We had all been waiting for lights since 8pm and the aurora got stronger between 11pm and midnight.
Photo taken on Fuji X-T4
KP was very low and the density was also low, so it was not the best. Still, it’s something 🙂
19 January 2023
Where? Karasjok, Norway.
When? 2:30am. We had been trying since 8pm!
Photo taken on Fuji X-T5 (finally upgraded from my old camera – what a difference!
The lights were a little weak, but the conditions in Karasjok were perfect. The spot we were at was terrible; you can see the street lights have completely overexposed the image.
22 January 2023
Where? Nordkjosbotn, Norway
When? 7:30pm. What a civilised time to see the northern lights! The clouds were getting thicker and thicker, so we knew we needed to see them early.
Photo taken on Fuji X-T5 (finally upgraded from my old camera – what a difference!)
This night was KP4, which is why we got to see them so early. The clouds started blocking our view, but at least we got to see something.
7 February 2023
Where? Saariselka, Finland
When? 5:20am. We’d been checking all night but it had been cloudy. The clouds finally cleared for us!
Photo taken on iPhone 14 Pro
The lights reached a peak of KP4, so that’s why we were able to see them so early in the morning.
Here is a picture taking with my Fuji x-t5:
7 February 2023
Where? Karasjok, Norway
When? 5pm. We got very lucky and saw them in the early evening.
Photo taken on iPhone 14 Pro
The KP strength was 3.
We saw them five hours later, but the density was very low and it made it difficult to see them.
8 February 2023
Where? Lakselv, Norway
When? 8:30pm
Photo taken on iPhone 14 Pro
The KP strength was 3. There was a huge storm with 80km/h winds, so we were expecting it to be very cloudy. However, the skies cleared just long enough for us to see. Unfortunately I couldn’t use my good camera for this.
9 February 2023
Where? Olderfjord, Norway
When? 5pm
Photo taken on iPhone 14 Pro
We saw the lights while driving towards Olderfjord from North Cape. We pulled over briefly for pictures.
9 February 2023
Where? Alta, Norway
When? 12:20am
Photo taken on Fuji X-T5
The lights were very strong but unfortunately Alta was very cloudy.
